This Whole30 Tuna Salad is a take on the classic. Made with avocado mayo and capers instead of sweet relish, it has all the flavors you love of classic tuna salad. And it's Keto!
There are two kinds of people in the world. People that like tuna salad and people that hate it. I'm team tuna. It's a quick and easy meal - doesn't need to thaw or cook. You can make a huge batch and have lunch ready all week. What's not to love?
How to Make Tuna Salad Whole30
Most tuna salad is made with soybean mayonnaise and sweet relish. That's how we had it growing up. This recipe is just as good but without soy and sugar. To make this recipe Whole30, you'll need to check the labels of the ingredients you're using.
You'll need the following ingredients:
- Canned Tuna - My favorite brand is Wild Planet. The Albacore wild tuna has a ton of flavor and extra fattiness to it.
- Mayo - I used my favorite avocado mayo {Chosen Foods Brand - they sell a big jar of it at Costco} or you can make your own, which is really easy. It's one of the first things we learned in culinary school. I find it cheaper to buy a big jar from Costco, but it's definitely worth trying.
- Celery - I like the added crunch.
- Red Onion - Optional but adds more crunch.
- Capers - They add a nice briny flavor to the salad. It's a good substitute for the sweet relish in most tuna salad. Diced pickles work great too.
- Fresh Dill - Optional but adds great flavor.
To make the tuna salad, combine all the ingredients in a large bowl - season with salt and pepper, or my favorite, Everything Bagel Seasoning. Serve with crackers or veggies. It's that simple, and you can make double or triple the batch for quick meal prep throughout the week.
When using mayo, you can use a little or a lot. Classic tuna salad is pretty heavy on the mayo. I prefer just enough to hold everything together. Start with a smaller amount and add more as needed.
Whole30 and Paleo Variations
Make sure to check the labels of the mayo and capers when making this recipe. Use an avocado mayo or make your own. There are tons of recipes on Pinterest for homemade mayonnaise.
If Whole30, serve with sliced veggies or wrapped in lettuce for a grain-free sandwich.
If Keto or Paleo, most supermarkets have grain-free crackers or bread to use.
I like to serve mine with sliced peppers, cucumbers, and tomatoes. It's perfect for lunch!
